Quantum Sensing: Unlocking the Secrets of Single Molecules
In the world of quantum mechanics, researchers at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) have made a groundbreaking discovery. They have developed a new quantum sensing technique that utilizes a single molecule as a sensor, a method never demonstrated before.
Quantum sensors harness the unique properties of quantum mechanics to make ultra-precise measurements, and this new technique has the potential to revolutionize fields like drug discovery and structural biology. By probing the spin of atoms within molecules, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of how proteins and biomolecules behave.
Dr. Raffi Budakian, a professor at IQC, emphasizes the significance of this advancement: "Our experiment establishes a new paradigm in nanoscale quantum sensing. We're not too far away now from having a sensor sensitive to single molecules, and this is a huge demonstration."
The group's method involves using a class of molecules called trityl-OX063 as quantum sensors. By isolating and protecting the spin of these molecules, researchers can preserve their quantum properties and achieve higher sensitivity compared to traditional diamond-based sensing techniques.
One of the key challenges was maintaining the coherence of the OX063 spins, and the team's innovative control sequence extended the coherence time, making these sensors even more useful.

Stephanie Saal, a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, has been awarded the prestigious Weston Family Award in Northern Research. Her research focuses on the impact of snowpack on ecological relationships in the Canadian north, an area she has a deep passion for.
Stephanie's journey began over a decade ago when she visited the Yukon, and her connection to the region has only grown stronger. Her work with First Nations, government, and industry has provided her with a unique perspective on the environmental concerns and needs of the north.
One of the key challenges Stephanie identified was the lack of reliable, large-scale snowpack information, which is crucial for ecological monitoring and flood forecasting. With new microwave sensors now available, she is making meaningful progress in retrieving watershed-scale snowpack data.
In partnership with Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN), Stephanie uses differential interferometry from synthetic aperture radar satellites to track snowpack development, enabling landscape-scale estimates of snow water equivalent. Her research not only advances our understanding of environmental change but also supports the communities and ecosystems that depend on these lands.
